Beyond the Screen was a video installation that was presented in September 2022 at 64 Kala Bagai Way. For this project, the artist recorded and edited conversations at two different points in the pandemic and produced two videos that played in a continuous loop from dark until midnight.

The first section of the video is a conversation with artist Victor Mavedzenge during the early days of Shelter-In-Place orders in the Bay Area. Victor also works as a Project Manager with Downtown Streets Team. He and the artist talked about issues of equity, community, and resilience, focusing on what he’s learned about community from the unhoused Downtown Streets Team Members, as well as how his art practice keeps him grounded and centered during the challenging period of physical isolation.

The second section of the video featured a conversation with some Downtown Streets Team Members, recorded after vaccinations were widely available and it was safe to do an in-person interview. These Team Members talked about what community meant for them, what their ideal day would be, and what they are afraid of. They also shared what they hope for as we move through these challenging times.
