BERKELEY ART WORKS PROJECTS (BAWP) was a temporary public art program designed to bolster our community’s resilience and recovery from the effects of COVID-19 by funding artists, performers, and community members to create temporary projects in the public realm throughout the city of Berkeley, California.

These 21 projects were funded by the City of Berkeley’s Civic Arts Program and took place between July 2021 and September 2023.

ABOUT Grantee were asked to respond to one of the following themes through their project:

  • Public health & wellbeing

  • Economic recovery & resilience

  • Community connection & belonging 

Artist/Performer-Initiated Projects: The larger Berkeley Arts Works Project Grants provided economic opportunities for Berkeley artists struggling during an economically challenging time and bolster Berkeley's cultural and economic vitality. This program supported projects with budgets up to $10,000.

Microgrants: The smaller Berkeley Art Works Microgrants, available to Berkeley residents regardless of formal artistic training, provided grants up to $500 to support publicly accessible creative projects throughout Berkeley's neighborhoods.
