As a celebration of diversity and a commemoration of the struggles of immigrants who survive the hard journey towards a better life, the city of Berkeley has approved work on “Sinbad’s Voyage,” a mural at the intersection of Dwight and Sacramento. This mural deals in particular with the plight of the Middle Easterners, North Africans, and others who have fled war and devastation and tried to make their way across the Mediterranean Sea in our own time. The characters in the image are mostly based on real individuals who either perished in their journeys or survived. The painting’s name, “Sinbad’s Voyage,” refers to one of the mythical heroes of The One Thousand and One Nights, who fearlessly led a group of sailors in their search for happiness.
