Milani Pelley
Writing Reality: A Creative Safe Space for Women was a writing workshop series facilitated in January-February 2022, by Berkeley-based writer-poet, Milani Pelley. Women-identifying individuals were invited to freely express themselves through writing and connecting with others. In response to Berkeley’s fraught history of urban development and the displacement of many BIPOC communities (compounded by the economic challenges of the pandemic), the workshop was created to build allyship amongst BIPOC and non-BIPOC women, establishing a safe place to express oneself, build relationships, and ultimately strengthen and stabilize the local community.
The workshops culminate in Writing Reality: An All-Women Showcase, which shares the journeys of participants, including Stephanie Pelley, Victoria Leftridge, Joyce Lytle, Rayna Pelley, Roopa Ramamoorthi, and Cherie Pelley. The event will spotlight Diana Medina and Danee Black, DJ MunkeePants, with BAWP grantee Milani Pelley as event emcee.
